SESSION:  Finding Allies? The transformation demands strange bedfellows  (Ballroom)

Traditional (so-called legacy or incumbent) healthcare stakeholders have been unquestionably and uncomfortably slow in transforming their models to embrace or align with the value movement.  On the upside, this void has paved the way for highly motivated, innovative new entrants to emerge as disruptors of the status quo in healthcare.  This session will highlight three such disruptors who will expose their challenges and headwinds, opportunities, and success in accelerating the movement to value.

SESSION: Multi-stakeholder Effort to Improve Maternity Care in Connecticut (Ballroom)

Maternity care cost varies significantly by payer (commercial or Medicaid), by type of birth (vaginal or cesarean section), and by setting (hospital or birth center). Prenatal care, labor and birth, and postpartum care are often paid for and delivered as three distinct periods when, in reality, they are all three phases of one episode in a woman’s life. To incentivize coordination across the practitioners and settings where the full spectrum of maternity services are provided, episode payment can be used with the goals of improving patient care, increasing coordination across services and providers, and lowering health care costs.  This session will review the work that stakeholders have been doing in Connecticut to improve patient care and overall healthcare value.

SESSION:  Accelerating Healthcare Transformation with Innovation in CT (Ballroom)

Doctors who were early adopters of value-focused care transformation did so with the expectation that doing so would result in better patient outcomes, increased patient volume, and more business success.  The increase in patient volume has been slow to come.  Employers and brokers have been pushing big insurers to develop plan designs that nudge employees to higher-value providers, but the insurers have made limited progress.  Recently, some health system contracts with insurers had secret provisions that forbid insurers from identifying better performing doctors. Recognizing employer interest in getting employees to high-value providers, entrepreneurs have stepped in and created products to meet this need.  This MTVA session will spotlight these entrepreneurs' success in moving patients to higher-value providers.

SESSION:  Facing the Critical Shortage of Healthcare Workers (Ballroom)

The Covid pandemic, now in its 3rd year, has been exhausting, frustrating, and heartbreaking for many, but few have been affected more than front-line healthcare workers, especially nurses. Hospitals and health systems are facing unprecedented levels of staff burnout, turnover, and resignations, resulting in significant cost increases in salaries, sign-on bonuses, and travel nurses. The MTVA will explore how health systems, nursing schools, and entrepreneurs are addressing this current and future labor crisis.

SESSION:  Being Strategic About Value: A Case Study in Cancer Care (Ballroom)

Cancer is one of the biggest categories of health spend for employers.  More than 70% of patients diagnosed with cancer never get a second opinion.  Despite huge improvements in cancer treatments, many patients simply follow conventional care paths achieving variable and unpredictable outcomes.  Our panel of experts will tackle the problem and will discuss huge opportunities to improve care paths using precision medicine and other innovations bringing value to cancer care.
